Silver Flag is pleased to present 9,000 Pieces by Euan Macdonald.
The show’s title work, 9,000 Pieces, (a HD video projection) shows a “Repetition and Responsiveness” testing machine that was shot by the artist at a musical instrument factory on the outskirts of Shanghai, China in 2010. During the course of the five minute video Macdonald carefully documents the various moving parts of a factory machine designed to test the endurance on the products it manufactures. In a sense the testing machine compresses time as it simulates a life time of use on the instrument.
Silver Flag est fière de présenter 9,000 Pieces par Euan Macdonald. L’oeuvre 9,000 Pieces présente la « répétition et la sensibilité » d’une machine d’essai de produits manufacturés. La vidéo de Euan Macdonald, réalisée en haute définition et d’une durée de 5 minutes, documente méticuleusement les différents mouvements produits par la machine d’essai servant à la vérification de l’endurance des produits. Réalisée en 2010, dans une manufacture chinoise d’instruments de musique située en périphérie de Shanghai, la vidéo fait preuve à travers ses différentes variations de la compression de l’espace et du temps. L’endurance, la durée de vie, que devrait avoir l’instrument musical, est démontrée sous la période du contrôle de qualité.
“Macdonald quietly unsettles the viewer’s faith about what exactly is—or is not—happening in the pictures he or she is looking at. 9,000 Pieces engineers a similar, though more elaborate, uncertainty. It does so, in part, by withholding contextual clues, and by depicting the action in close-ups so that —on the most basic level—we are left unsure of how the various moving mechanical parts that we witness all fit together. Early on, the video also leaves us in doubt about the nature of the overwhelming wall of noise on the soundtrack, a mechanical uproar that is scarcely recognizable....”
